What Is the NDIS and How Can It Help Me or My Family?

If you’ve been hearing about the NDIS and wondering how it works—or whether it could support you or your loved one—you’re not alone. Many people feel overwhelmed when they first start exploring the National Disability Insurance Scheme. But don’t worry—we’re here to help.

At Shield of Care, we believe in making things simpler, more personal, and a whole lot more human. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the NDIS in plain English and show you how we can support you along the way.

So, What Is the NDIS?

The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) is Australia’s way of helping people with a disability get the right supports to live a full, meaningful life.

The NDIS is government-funded, which means you don’t need to repay it. And it’s person-centred, which means the funding gets spent directly on you, so you’re in charge of the supports you receive.

The NDIS is designed for people under 65 who have a permanent and significant disability that impacts their ability to take part in everyday life.

Who Can Access the NDIS?

You might be eligible if you:

  • Are under 65 years old
  • Are an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Have a permanent disability that affects your ability to do everyday things
  • Need help now—and into the future—to achieve your goals, stay safe, or participate in your community

📝 Not sure if you’re eligible? You can use the NDIS Access Checklist here: www.ndis.gov.au

What Kind of Support Can the NDIS Fund?

NDIS funding is tailored to you—your needs, your goals, your life.

Here are just a few examples of what can be funded:

  • Support workers to help with daily activities like cooking, showering, or going out
  • Therapies like occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech or behavioural support
  • Nursing care or high-intensity support for complex needs
  • Home modifications, mobility equipment, and assistive technology
  • Support coordination to help you manage your plan and build your independence
  • Social and community participation, helping you stay connected

How Do I Apply?

It starts with an Access Request to the NDIS. You can do this:

  • Over the phone: 1800 800 110
  • Via a form from your GP, allied health professional, or Local Area Coordinator (LAC)

Once accepted, you’ll work with the NDIS or your LAC to develop your first plan—a personalised budget that matches your goals and support needs.
